Was just walking down the street and look who I ran into...

After participating in the lovely Frida Kahlo festival last weekend, Culture Sock is grateful to say we were able to experience and be apart of the beautiful and vibrant community in the Mission and the culture that Frida Kahlo has created. Frida Kahlo has built her own empire of art and ideologies that have continued to grow and thrive even after her death. During the festival, everyone was very lively, laughing and dancing to the music. Dancers swaying their hips back and forth, twirling their partners from left to right. Musicians connecting their souls to their instruments, bringing joy and excitement to the audience. Everyone seemed to be in perfect unity, even though we all came from different walks of life and all had unique personalities. It was a lot to absorb at first, but then when you looked around and observed how happy everyone else looked, it all just seemed so natural, like this is how simple life is supposed to be. I believe that that very realization is why artists such as Frida Kahlo did what they did; brought people of all walks of life together and just simply celebrated the world we live in and life itself.
Culture sock really enjoyed seeing all of the artwork and the super cool and creative Frida Kahlo costumes. The food was also delicious and the agua fresca was super refreshing. It was also great to see how interested people were in our socks and we loved seeing their positive reactions when they came to our booth and were admiring the uniqueness and creativeness of our novelty Frida Kahlo socks! Overall, the Frida Kahlo Festival was a fun celebration in honor of Frida Kahlo and is an experience that Culture Sock was proud to be apart of and will forever cherish!! - Chloe Hibser As some of you may know, here at Culture Sock, we are huge fans of Frida Kahlo and are excited to celebrate her upcoming birthday on July 6th!! I think our Frida Kahlo novelty socks symbolize a bit of our admiration and respect towards the renowned artist. Frida Kahlo is known and praised for her symbolic artwork and her modern sense of style. Similar to Frida, Culture Sock incorporates a lot symbolism and a modern twist to their socks. For example, the set of Frida Kahlo socks have 3 images, one of Frida Kahlo, her husband, Diego Rivera, and her lover, Leon Trotsky. These images symbolize the relationships Frida had with men and how she broke the gender stereotypes of women that were strongly enforced during that time period (late 1920s). The stereotypes of that time included women only being allowed one husband or one significant other in their life, however their husbands could have as many wives as they pleased, without any disgust or judgement from others. In addition, I think Frida’s work and actions were so revolutionary because she disregarded the sexists / prejudice beliefs that were so heavily imposed on society during that time. This may be one of the reasons why her work today is so highly appreciated and respected. So we honor Frida Kahlo and all of her radical work that she’s done in changing society and improving the way we live and the way we look at the world. So happy early birthday Frida Kahlo and may you rest in peace!! 🙏💗
- Chloe Hibser A wonderful photo exhibit is on display at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California. Photographs provide a glance into the life of our beloved Frida Kahlo.
Make sure to pick up a trio of Culture Sock at the museum's gift shop. Would you rather take fifteen minutes of fame or fifteen minutes of being Frida Kahlo?
Love this project by Camila Fontenele de Miranda. Men, women and children take on the qualities of Frida Kahlo, not just put on clothing and make up. Could this be the new meditation? |
